. the sandy hook elementary school. for those of you who are just tuning in, we are now getting numbers, our own john king reporting, quoting law enforcement sources as saying at least 20, but perhaps closer to 30 individuals, many of them children, have been killed in this incident. individual suspect, a 20-year-old, is -- the suspect, the shooter is a 20-year-old. law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation telling our susan candiotti, that suspect, we believe, is dead right now. you just heard police at a small briefing, didn't provide a lot of information, but they did tell us the area now appears to be secure, but this has been a horrific, horrific mass killing at an elementary school in connecticut. a school for kids from kindergarten through fourth grade. we're watching all of this unfold. lisa procachini is on the phone right now. she's a parent of an 8-year-old at the school, the sandy hook elementary school. your 8-year-old is fine, i take it, lisa. tell us what happened. walk us through what you saw and what you heard. >> well, i had a call from one of the teacher

of the sandy hook elementary. work continues inside the school, the crime scene. here's what we know about the guns. three of them were found next to the body of the suspected gunman. his name of course is adam lanza, 20 years old. officials say one was the primary weapon used and it was a semiautomatic rifle. we have also learned that the 20 children who were killed inside the school were shot multiple times. every single one of them was either six or seven years old. president obama is going to arrive here in newtown this afternoon to try to comfort the victims' families. he's scheduled to arrive here in about an hour and a half. he is going to be meeting with the families and also with the first responders. and after that he's going to be speaking at an interfaith vigil. we're going to be taking that vigil here on cnn live in its entirety. it begins at 7:00 eastern time. we do know the names of the victims today. but we are still learning about who they were, what their lives were like. so short, but no doubt given their age, providing so much joy for those around them. nick valencia is

that all america remembers from last friday of the children at sandy hook school in newtown, connecticut, filing out heading for safety at the firehouse. i don't know that i can look at the faces of these children as their names have been roartd and not think of my own kids when they were that age and especially of my own grandchildren now who were just a little over a year old. but i saw in the eyes of those children what all of us see, an innocence, happiness, an interest in the future and just the greatest dreams in the world. well, in one brutal, debraved -- deprived hometown those dreams ended when that gunman forced way into sandy hook school and shot those poor, innocent children. at that moment some people stepped forward who really became heroes of the day. four teachers, rachel davino, anne marie murphy, lauren rousseau, victor yoa soat pe merry sherlach the school psychologist, and dawn hochsprung the principal who walked into the face of this gunman to try to stop him from harming any chirp. we'd like to think any of us would rise to a standard of courage they showed. i hope
